Elli didn't say anything, she just stared at me, unblinking. Her face was splotchy and her eyes were red, like she had been crying. So she did want me there. She had to. Why else would she look so sad? So completely defeated?

I couldn't stand the silence. I got up and walked over to her, rubbing her arm. She didn't have to say she loved me, it wasn't like I was looking for her to. I just needed to know she wanted me there.

“Have you been crying?” I questioned, wiping a tear from her face with my thumb.

“No...” she trailed off, “that would be crazy...”

She moved her face to the side away from my gaze, wiping her eyes thoroughly. I kept my hand on her arm, feeling her softness, her warmth. It had only been a few hours, but I had missed it.

“Not crazy at all,” I corrected.

“What are you doing here?” She turned back to look at me. I searched her face, looking for clarity. Some sign, a glimmer of happiness at the sight of me. But she just looked surprised.

“I thought you might wonder that,” I nodded, turning around and sitting back on her stoop, “you see, I was sitting there for about...30 minutes, thinking to myself, what are you doing? Why are you leaving right now? You don't have anything to do for the next week. Why not just stay here? Then I realized, there was no good answer. So I came back.”

Elli still didn't moved, she looked almost frozen in place. She shifted her eyes from places to place, looking for somewhere to focus.

Perhaps I was reading the situation wrong.

“How did you get here before me?” She finally said.

“I took an uber from the airport all the way here.”

“You paid all that money just to get here before me?” She paused, “why?”

“I was trying to be romantic.”

“Fuck you,” she muttered, a slow smile creeping from her lips.

Finally unstuck, she came towards me, dropping onto my lap. She wrapped her arms around my neck, pulling me towards her and kissing me.

A kiss that told me everything I needed to know.
