Morgan
Elli was completely and utterly smashed. Even when we first met, and she was drinking straight rum out of her flask, she wasn't even close to being this drunk. This was a completely different side to her that was definitely...intriguing.
We all had grabbed a table to sit at, and Natalie and her were telling me stories of when they were regulars at this very pub.
“We used to wingman...wingwoman? Wingmanwoman each other all the time,” Elli told me, her head resting sloppily in her hand. Her smile glowed, as did her rosey cheeks.
“Yup, yup,” Natalie agreed, then added “did you know Elli can tie a cherry stem with her tongue?”
“I can! Though it was a lot easier without my tongue piercing, now it gets all tangled,” she scowled, “did you know Nat can fit her whole fist in her mouth??”
“It's true,” Natalie nodded.
“So what, you guys just went back and forth like that, and it worked?”
“Yup,” they both said at the same time, and then laughed.
I was starting to see the appeal of their friendship.
“Hey Elli,” a guy said, walking up to our table.
“Oh...hey Kyle,” Elli returned, looking a little startled. She snapped herself straight trying to alter her composure.
“Hiiiiii Kyle,” Natalie called.
“Yeah, hey Nat,” this Kyle lad sounded unimpressed, “I wanted to go over some things...”
“Yup!” Elli jumped up, interrupting him, “we can go talk over here. I'll be right back guys.”
Elli walked away with Kyle, turning back and giving me an awkward glance. I wondered what she was so worried about me hearing.
“Who's that?” I ask Natalie, who was suppressing a laugh.
“Oh, just some guy, you know...that Elli, you know?” Natalie told me, pressing the implication hard.
“Oh...” For the first time, I felt the weird sting of jealousy. I didn't even know this guy, and I had no right to care. But I did.
“Yeah, like, a long time ago, when we were on our bender,” Natalie offered, as if that made it better.
“I just figured...I mean, she only talked about the two guys, and then it had been such a long time after Paul...”
Natalie shifted in her seat uncomfortably, obviously realizing she had given me too much information. Knowing she couldn't stop now. Pandora’s box had been opened.
“Yeah, I mean, she's only had two long-term relationships. I mean her and Will dated in high school, they were together for like 4 years. When they finally broke up...we just went through a phase, you know?”
“How many?” I blurted, immediately regretting it. I had no right to ask Natalie that kind of question, and I knew it.
“No, no way!” Natalie retorted, “I am not going down that road.”
“Well, what about Ami, what's the deal with her? Why is Elli being so secretive?” I couldn't stop myself. I had opened the floodgate of questions, and they were all pouring out. Just earlier today I was relishing the mystery of her. Now I felt the compulsion to know everything about her.
“Listen, if Elli doesn't want to talk about it, there is no way I'm going behind her back,” Natalie affirmed.
Their friendship was really coming into focus. Even though I felt irritated with the lack of information she would give me. I knew it was wrong to ask.
Elli came back to the table, sitting down and offering me a smile.
“Sorry about that,” she apologized, “work stuff.”
“I thought you were between jobs?” I questioned.
“Looks like it might be picking back up,” she answered, looking around, her tell that she didn't want to talk about it.
“Okay, well, I kind of sort of said that you and Kyle slept together, and then Morgan asked me how many people you slept with between Will and Paul, and I'm sorry. But I didn't tell him. I'm going to peace though before things get weird,” Natalie said all at once, getting up and rushing away.
That slag.
